3. 述語動詞の用法


次の日本文を英訳せよ。

 

1. 我々はその問題について3時間議論した。(自動詞と他動詞)

2. 1969年、人類は初めて月着陸に成功した。(SV)

3. 30代で、彼の黒い髪は白髪まじりになった。(SVC)

4. 我々の提案を拒絶した理由を、私に説明しなさい。(SVO)

5. 真の芸術作品は、それまで見えなかったものを、我々に見せてくれる。(SVOO)

他動詞:discuss O

自動詞:talk about

We discussed the issue for three hours.

We talk about the matter for three hours.

 

2.

月に着陸する land on the moon

することに成功する succeed in ~ing

In 1969, man succeeded in landing on the moon for the first time.

 

3.

「~になる」は、become, get, turn など。

彼の黒髪は/変わった/グレーに/30代で

His black hair turned gray in his thirties.

 

4.

「提案」は、proposal, suggestion

「拒絶する」は、turn down ~, say no to ~, reject ~。declineは「(丁寧に)断る」の意なので不適。

Explain to me the reason (why) you turned down our proposal.

Explain to me why you said no to our suggestion.

 

5.

「新の芸術作品」は a true work of art, a true masterpiece。

「見えなかった」は、we have never been able to see, we have failed to see。

「それまで」は until then, before。

「もの」は、things, 関係代名詞の what。

A true masterpiece shows us what we have never been able to see until then.

 

6.

「大晦日」は、on New Year's Eve, on the last day of the year。

「神社」は、(Shinto) shrine。

「大変な人出である」→「人々で混雑している」は、full of people, crowded with people。

On New Year's Eve I found the Shinto shrine full of people.

On the last day of the year I went to the shrine , and it was crowded with people.

4. 述語動詞の示すさまざまな特徴


次の日本文を英訳せよ。

 

1. 人込みの中で、誰かが後ろから私の名前を呼ぶのが聞こえた。

2. 政府はその事実を国民に知らせようとはしなかった。

3. 私が服を着るまで、外で待っていなさい。昨日彼女に会った時、彼女はきれいな着物を着ていた。

4. 子供たちは、ピクニックが中止になったと聞いてがっかりした。

5. 新聞によると、昨日の列車事故で2名の乗客が死亡し、7名が負傷した。

6. 彼がその仕事を終えたら、すぐに私たちは出発します。

7. 外に出ると、すでに雪はやんでいたが、ひどい寒さであった。

1. 知覚動詞

「人込み」は、in the crowd, among the crowd。

「後ろから」は、from behind。

私は聞いた/誰かが呼ぶのを/私の名前を/後ろから/人込みの中で

I heard someone call my name from behind in the crowd.

人込みの中で/私は聞いた/私の名前が呼ばれるのを/誰かに/後ろから

in the crowd I heard my name called someone from behind.

 

2. 使役動詞

「~しようとしなかった」は、wouldn't ~, refused to ~。

The government wouldn't make the people know the fact.

The government refused to tell the nation that fact.

 

3. 動作動詞と状態動詞

「~を着る」は、動作動詞のput on ~。「~を着ている」は状態動詞 wear。

Wait outside my room until I put on my clothes.

When I met her yesterday, she wore a beautiful kimono.

主な状態動詞は、belong to ~(~に属している), consist of ~(~から成っている), contain(含んでいる), differ(異なっている),

have(持っている), know(知っている), like(好きである), live(住んでいる), resemble(似ている) など。

※ これらの幾つかは、動作動詞として用いられることもある。

 

4. 感情・心理状態を表す場合

「中止になる」は、「中止する」の他動詞(cancel, call off など)を受動態で表す。

子供たちはがっかりした/聞いて/ピクニックが中止になると[なったと]/

The children were disappointed to hear that the picnic was [had been] called off.

 

5. 病気・事故を表す場合

「新聞によると」は、according to the newspaper, 「新聞が~と述べている」と言い換えてThe newspaper says that ~。

「死亡する」は、be killed, die。

「負傷する」は、be injured, be hurt。

According to the newspaper, two of the passengers were killed and seven hurt in the yesterday's train accident.

6.

「を終える」は、finish ~, get through (with) ~, complete ~。

「~したら直ぐに」は、as soon as ~, just after ~, immedately after ~。

「出発する」は、set out, start, depart。

We'll set out as soon as he finishes the work.

We'll start just after he finishes the work.

 

7.

「外に出る」は、go outdoors, go outside, go out。

「雪がやむ」は、It stops snowing, the snow stops。

When I went outdoors, it was very cold though it had already stopped snowing.
