無生物主語構文(よく用いられる動詞)

~に連れて行く(くる):take / lead /bring

…させる:make / cause

(無理に)…させる:compel / force /bolige

…するのを許す:allow / permit

…するのを妨げる:keep / prevent/stop

…(の状態)にさせる:drive / make / leave / keep

名詞構文(動詞または形容詞を名詞化して、名詞中心の表現にした構文)

1. その子供は物を覚えるのが速い。

1-1. The child learns fast.

1-2. The child is fast at learning.

1-3. The child is a fast learner.

ピンクが文の中心になる。1-3の表現が名詞構文である。

2. 彼が事業に失敗したと聞いて、私はがっがりした。

通常の訳:I was disappointed to hear he (had) failed in the business.

名詞構文:His failure in the business disappointed me.


例文

 

1. この道を10分歩いていくと、地下鉄の駅に出るでしょう。

2. 彼が大西洋横断飛行に成功したと聞いて、世界中の人が驚いた。

3. 彼の絵に感動しない者は、ほとんどいないといってよい。

4. 彼女は甘い物に目がないので、ダイエットをするのにとても苦労する。

 

カッコ内の名詞を用いた表現(名詞構文)の類題

1. あなたが初めて中国を訪れたのはいつでしたか。(visit)

1. 無生物主語

A ten minutes' walk along this road will take you to the subway station.

「10分間の徒歩」は、a ten minutes' walk, a ten-minute walk。

「地下鉄」は、subway <<米>>, tube <<英>>, underground。

「…を~に連れて行く」は、take[lead] … to ~。

Walk along this road for ten minutes, and you will arrive at the subway station.

If you walk along this street for ten minutes, you will get to the underground station.

2. 名詞構文

People throughout the world were surprised to hear his success in flying across the Atlantic.

His success in flying across  the Atlantic Ocean amazed people all over the world.

「世界中の人々」は、people throughout[all over] the world。

3. 発想の転換

We can say that almost everyone is moved by his pictures.

It can be (safely) said that there is scarcely anyone that is not impressed by his paintings.

「…と言ってよい」は、We can (safely) say that …, it can be (safely) that …。

「ほとんどすべての者が…する」は、almost everyone[everybody]…。

「…しない者はほとんどいない」は、there is scarcely[hartly] anyone that ~ not …。

4. 日本語特有の慣用表現を言い換える

She is so fond of sweets that she finds it very hard to lose weight.

She has great difficulty in going on a diet, because she cannot resist sweet things.

「~に目がない」は、cannot resist ~ (~を我慢することができない), have a weakness of ~(~が大好物である)。

「ダイエットする」は、go on a diet, lose weight(減量する)でも可。
